Licence and plan

Installing a key, what the states mean, and what actually stops when one expires.

Under Tenancy, which admins and owners can reach. It has three sections but never three at once:

  • People — always, and where the page opens.
  • Licence — self-hosted only.
  • Plan — hosted, and owners only.

#Installing a licence

Two ways in, and only two.

Paste the key, under Tenancy → Licence:

Paste the key from your licence email. Renewing is pasting a newer one — nothing is contacted and this works with no internet connection.

Owner only. A non-owner is told who can do it rather than simply refused.

Fetch it from your Mosaic account, on the first-run screen only — before the installation has any account. Afterwards, the Licence card is the way.

Removing a licence returns the installation to the free tier. "Checks keep running either way." It only removes a key stored in the database; a key supplied through the environment belongs to whoever operates the server and is not undone from a browser.

#The five states

ChipMeans
FreeNo key at all
LicensedSigned and in date
Expired — grace periodPast its date, inside the window. Everything still runs
ExpiredPast grace
Not verifiedPresent but not genuine. Treated as no licence

The grace period is 14 days, and the reasoning is refreshingly concrete: a renewal can be late because a purchase order is stuck in approvals, the finance contact is on leave, or the machine has not reached anything since Friday.

#What expiry actually stops

This is the part worth knowing before it happens.

This licence expired on 2026-08-01 and its grace period has ended. Checks still run and results are still readable; schedules will not fire and nothing new can be published until it is renewed.

Precisely two things stop:

  • Schedules do not fire.
  • Nothing new can be published.

Everything else continues. Reading, running by hand, exporting, editing — all unaffected, for ever. Unpublishing is always allowed, on every tier and in every state.

The same principle governs the ceilings: a limit blocks creating something new, never reading or running what exists. An installation already holding thirty Checks keeps all thirty if it drops to a tier that allows two.

Every refusal says so:

Data sources, drivers and the rows they hold are never counted, runs you start yourself are never refused, and nothing you already have is affected.

#What the card shows

The tier and its description, the state, who it is licensed to, and when it expires — with a countdown once there are thirty days or fewer.

Then a fold, What this licence allows, open by default only when something is capped or missing. Inside: the limits — Checks, People, Workspaces, Environments, Schedules, Apps, Business systems, Business locations, Captured schemas, Collections, API keys — where Unlimited means no ceiling and Not included means the tier does not have that thing at all, rather than that you have used it up.

Below them, the capabilities, with the absent ones greyed rather than hidden so you can see what a higher tier would add.

Only People shows a used-of-allowed fraction.

#During the beta

An unlicensed installation is currently granted everything except schema capture, and says so:

Beta. The whole product, free and unmetered, for as long as this lasts — every feature, no ceilings, no card. Tell us what breaks.

So none of the ceilings above are in force yet on an installation with no key.

#Plan, on the hosted service

Owners of a hosted workspace see Plan instead of Licence.

Nothing is charged here. Pick the plan you want and we will be in touch to set it up.

It is a request, not a purchase — the wording is deliberate throughout.

The same section carries the self-hosting route:

For systems the cloud cannot reach — a store network, a database behind a firewall. Download Mosaic and paste this key on its first-run screen; it carries your plan onto the installation.
